No specific examples come to mind, but the Stop and Shop in South Orange plays real songs, and every once in a while one catches my ear as an unusual or unusually welcome selection.
Not hipster, but the Stop and Shop just made me happy with Greg Kihn’s Breakup Song and ELO’s Fire on High back to back.

they don't write 'em like that any more
Both songs, coincidentally, that don’t reveal their title unless you just know it. So maybe a little hipster after all.

Seems more appropriate for Shop Rite to play it during their Kihn Kihn Sale.

And the ELO for a Sports Drink Spectacular.
and another Marshall Crenshaw connection -- saw a Greg Kihn Band show at Seton Hall (in the cafeteria) in 1982, and Marshal was the opener, the week his first album was released.

appropriate comment for a guy whose album titles were usually puns on his name.
Shoprite in West Orange has me singing along and dancing in the aisles. And I look forward to chatting in front of the cat food and on occasion handing out my cat rescue card, which recently resulted in a call for help. Happy to oblige.
Maybe I need to get out more.

I've noticed in recent weeks that the Millburn Shoprite has changed its piped in music from saccharine muzak to real, cool rock pop etc. I've heard things like Steely Dan and, yesterday, a song by Father John Misty (real name Josh Tillman), a contemporary singer songwriter who get played a lot on college/alternative rock radio. Is this happening in other supermarkets?
