Musk’s recent claims that the Social Security Administration is sending out payments to tens of millions of dead people more than 100 years old—a claim echoed by President Trump—were wrong: the software system defaults missing birthdates to more than 150 years ago and the Social Security Administration decided not to spend more than $9 million on upgrading its system to include death information. Right-wing podcaster Trish Regan warned DOGE that “it’s critical to present the math CORRECTLY” and noted: “Looks like the team got out over its skis on this one.”

That one got my attention this morning. Glancing at a clip of Trump discussing why Ukraine was not invited to his little meet and greet with Putin. I froze when he mouthed the phrase, "they shouldn't have started it" He then went on trashing Zelensky as having a low approval rating. Fact check, it is about the same as Trump's.

If Zelensky's approval rating is so high why won't he have elections? He should have nothing to worry about.

Nan, I understand that you support Russia's claims, and you get that I support Ukraine. For that reason, knowing that neither of us are ever going to abandon our loyalties, I don't debate it with you. We both know that you have an assortment of people here to argue with.
I stand with Ukraine.
Slava Ukraini!
This is a good choice.

[Edited to add] Reading down the page, it looks like even your polite declining to engage gets rewarded with a stupid, offensive insult.
Who in their right mind would hold elections during A WAR???
My mother had a couple of choice exclamations in Russian, but I can’t spell them.

Slava Ukraini is a Nazi salute. FYI.

"Glory to Ukraine!": Who and when created the slogan?
tl;dr - It's from before WWII, and even WWI.

It's true. It came from a Bandera group. So much culture in Ukraine related to Nazis and people continue to deny it. They have statues and streets named after Nazis.

Ukraine declared a state of martial law following the Russian attack in 2022.
Martial law means no elections can be held.

Two hours before you posted this, I posted a link to a detailed article that debunks the claim that it started with WWII. If you read more, you could avoid repeating ignorant hate speech like that.

I know about the martial law. It’s been going on awhile. He can hold some kind of elections as part of this peace process. The martial law is not why he won’t hold elections. He is also trying to sabotage potential opponents.

Current polls say 63% of Ukrainians believe the election should take place after the war.

Yeah, I heard that poll was either done by a friend of Zelenisky's or paid for by USAID. I will look into that and get back to you.
It's doubtful that is true. Also doubtful is Zelensky's popularity rating.
Have to go make more chicken now so I can't reserach.
Sometimes it’s hard to explain facts:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/feb/20/ukraine-elections-start-of-war-volodymyr-zelenskyy
” The former prime minister of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, told the BBC that Russia was "popping champagne right now" in response to Trump's comments.
"Volodymyr Zelensky is a completely legitimate president," he said. "We cannot hold elections under martial law." “ https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cjev2j70v19o
There are few safe buildings and roads in Ukraine right now. Communications can be fraught and transmission/publication unreliable. I doubt there are currently accurate voter roles; the postal system is barely functioning. How on earth would you expect appropriate ballots for each electorate to be securely printed and conveyed to polling places throughout the land?? How on earth do you expect to establish safe, secure polling places anywhere that all voters can visit AND NOT BE TARGETED FOR BOMBING?? What to do about POWs who should be voting?? Just discount them altogether, after their sacrifices??? How insulting.
How do you expect votes to be tallied, verified and results transmitted?? Any tally place BECOMES ANOTHER BOMBING TARGET.
It’s so glib to demand elections when you’re not a citizen, not in their situation, and have never lived through the reality of war.

No elections possible, but they can do polls where Zelensky has high popularity, right?
I have no idea how they sample the polls. But the key word is SAMPLE. And then extrapolate.
For an election, you need more ‘stuff’ and the complete electorate not a ‘sample’

Apparently. Also polls like this one from last fall, which raised nary a nan eyebrow.

There was a recent poll done and the majority of Ukrainians do not want this war:
Poll: Over 50% of Ukrainians want to end the war
Have you ever worked an election? Not for a candidate; I’m talking about helping the election happen.
I have, for over 25 years. I work issuing ballots, tallying, and voter security. I work at city council elections, State elections, and at federal elections. I’ve worked two State elections when cyclones hit and we lost electricity for around 7 hours. I worked one election with flooded bathrooms (school restrooms) so no working toilets for 12 hours.
My usual shift is 17 hours. You can’t leave the site, you can’t use your phone or internet; unless you’re the Supervisor, you can’t communicate offsite at all. The booths are open for 12 hours. And you count those slips of paper 3 times, after also combing through rubbish bins to grab discards to include in the count, before you go home.
And you’re expecting Ukraine to calmly run a whole-voting-population election during a war????

We did discuss it. Without any sense of wonder that it had been conducted during a war.
